On April 18, 2014 at 5:30pm, The School of Architecture & Design at Howard University will host a women’s symposium and exhibit entitled “Women + Architecture: A call to action for women in design, architecture and construction ” at the Howard H. Mackey and Silcott Gallery of the school. This event is not only a discussion of women, patronage, and mentorship; it is more importantly a call to action. The structure of the event will be conducted in a panelist question and answer format, configured to get to know the life, practice and experiences of each panelist. Afterwards, the Silcott Gallery will be open for viewing some of the work of the late Barbara G. Laurie. Refreshments will be served at the end the program.

The event is scheduled to take place at 5:30pm, April 18, 2014. From 5:30pm-6pm there will be a viewing in the Silcott Gallery. Within the gallery will be an exhibition of Professor Laurie’s work, all of which inspired me to conduct such a symposium. The panelist lecture will be held from 6pm-7:30pm. After the panelist discussion more time will be allotted for viewing the gallery as refreshments are served.

This event was created by 4th year Howard University architecture student, Tiara L Cypress, as part of her Independent Study project. Tiara felt is was her responsibility as a female architecture student to conduct a “women in architecture” symposium, and DC NOMA invites everyone to come out and support her event.
